If you’ve just started wearing braces, you’ve undoubtedly made a few adjustments to your day-to-day life. You’re remembering to avoid foods like popcorn and to take extra care when flossing, but did you think about kissing with braces? Thankfully, you don’t have to give up romance while straightening your smile! Here are some easy tips to keep in mind to make kissing with braces a pleasant experience.

Tip #1: Keep Your Mouth Clean

Brushing and flossing probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think about kissing your partner. However, it’s essential that you practice great oral hygiene when being romantic with braces. After all, no one wants to kiss somebody with bad breath whether they have braces or not!

Braces can trap and harbor food debris and plaque easily, so make sure you’re taking the time to thoroughly clean your mouth every day. That means brushing for two minutes twice a day and yes, flossing every day too. Flossing is especially important for cleaning out bits of food that would otherwise cause your breath to stink. Practice makes perfect, but if you’re having trouble flossing, try talking to your dentist about using a pre-threaded flosser or interdental brush.

Tip #2: Take It Slow

It takes some time to get used to braces. You’ll go through an adjustment period as you navigate how to brush, floss, eat, speak, and laugh with brackets and wires. It’s completely fine if you’re not ready for something as adventurous as kissing right away! When you feel ready, take it slow.

Being gentle while kissing with braces is incredibly important for the safety of you and your partner. It’s a good idea to start with closed lips. Be very careful not to bump your braces against the inside of your lips, which could scratch them. If you start open mouth kissing, don’t rush! Keep you and your partner’s tongues away from your braces to protect them from damage, and don’t let your braces touch your partner’s teeth.

Tip #3: Use Dental Wax

Dental or orthodontic wax can make wearing braces more comfortable, and it can make kissing more enjoyable for you and your partner as well! Covering up rough spots in your smile that could potentially snag lips or tongues can go a long way in putting both you and your partner’s minds at ease when you’re kissing. What’s more, most dental wax is clear or opaque, so it won’t stand out at all.

You don’t have to temporarily give up romance while you straighten your smile! Use these tips for kissing with braces so you and your partner can enjoy each other without worry or discomfort.
