Are you struggling with overlapped, spaced-out, or otherwise misaligned teeth? Then naturally you want your dream smile to be here as soon as possible. The good news is that while traditional braces can take 24+ months, the average Invisalign timeline is significantly shorter. But how long is it exactly? Read on to learn the answer!

So, How Long Does Invisalign Take?

The average Invisalign timeline is just 12 to 18 months, which is significantly shorter than traditional braces! Especially since patients with more minor misalignment can expect to complete treatment in as little as six months too. Of course, your exact timeline will depend on several important factors, like the severity of your misalignment, how many trays you need, if any preliminary treatments are needed first, and if additional accessories (like rubber bands) are needed.

Your Role in the Invisalign Process

It’s important to note that the length of your treatment timeline largely rests on compliance as well. Since the trays only work while you’re wearing them, you need to commit to the 22-hour-a-day wear time. If you miss the mark consistently, then there is a good chance that you’ll fall off track with your treatment plan, adding more time to the backend.

If you’re having trouble meeting the 22-hour-a-day rule, one of the best things to do is use the Invisalign app or a timer to track your wear time. Ideally, you should be taking out your aligners for only 30 minutes for breakfast, 30 minutes for lunch, 45 minutes for dinner, and 15 minutes throughout the day to complete your oral hygiene regimen. Each time you remove them, place them in their designed storage case to prevent losing them too!

What Happens If You Fall Off-Track?

At your check-in visits with your orthodontist, they will monitor how your teeth are tracking. If they aren’t moving as they should, they’ll discuss your treatment options. In some cases, this requires re-treatment, which can add several months to your timeline. That’s why it’s of the utmost importance that you follow all of your orthodontist’s instructions, from the 22-hour-a-day wear time to changing your trays on the right day.

If you want straight teeth and a gorgeous smile, then you should absolutely talk to your orthodontist about Invisalign. In addition to being discreet, it’s one of the fastest orthodontic treatments!
